# AI customer support cost: per ticket, compared with hiring and outsourcing

What customer support really costs per ticket with an in-house hire, an outsourced team or AI agents, with a worked 1,500-ticket example and a monthly cap.

> **Short answer:** Customer support costs roughly $5 per ticket with an in-house US hire, about $1 to $7 per ticket outsourced depending on where the team is, around $1 per AI-resolved ticket on per-resolution pricing, and can fall to cents per ticket on a flat-priced AI team, plus the time you spend approving. The numbers below show the working, so you can swap in your own volume.

Most cost comparisons quote salaries or software prices. Neither tells you what you actually want to know: what does it cost to resolve one customer's problem? That is **cost per ticket**: your total monthly support spend divided by the number of tickets resolved that month.

## What goes into the cost of customer support?

Whatever model you choose, the bill has the same parts:

- **Labor:** wages, or hourly fees to an outsourcer, or usage for AI.
- **Overhead:** benefits, payroll taxes, training, management time.
- **Software:** helpdesk seats, phone or chat tools.
- **Your time:** answering, reviewing, approving and fixing mistakes. Put an hourly value on it, even if you never pay yourself that.

Leave any of these out and the cheapest option on paper will not be the cheapest in practice.

## How much does a human support agent cost?

The US median wage for customer service representatives was $21.53 an hour in May 2025, or $44,770 a year ([BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/office-and-administrative-support/customer-service-representatives.htm)). Wages are not the full cost: in private industry, wages and salaries made up 70.1% of total employer compensation costs in December 2025, with benefits making up the rest ([BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/archives/ecec_03202026.htm)).

Applying that ratio, a $21.53 wage becomes about **$30.71 per hour of loaded labor cost** before software, training or management.

## How much does outsourced support cost?

Outsourcers bill per agent hour. One industry pricing guide puts onshore US outsourced support at $28 to $40 per agent hour in 2025 and offshore teams in India, the Philippines and Pakistan at $7 to $16 per agent hour ([Crescendo](https://crescendo.ai/blog/outsourced-call-center-pricing-guide)). These are published ranges from a vendor, not quotes; contract minimums, language requirements and training fees move them a lot. Get at least two quotes for your own volume.

## How much does AI customer support cost?

AI support is sold in three main ways:

1. **Per resolution.** You pay for each ticket the AI closes. For example, Intercom lists its Fin AI agent at $0.99 per outcome ([Intercom pricing](https://www.intercom.com/pricing)), on top of helpdesk seats for the humans who handle the rest.
2. **Per seat or per conversation.** Common in older chatbot tools; it scales with usage.
3. **Flat monthly price with a usage limit.** You pay a fixed amount for a team of agents sized for a given volume.

Per-resolution pricing is easy to understand but has no ceiling: a busy month means a bigger bill. Flat pricing is predictable, as long as the limit is hard and you know what happens when you reach it.

## What does 1,500 tickets a month cost? A worked example

Example: an online store handles 1,500 email tickets a month. To keep the comparison honest, we assume a human agent resolves 6 email tickets per hour, which means 250 agent hours a month. That rate is an assumption for illustration; measure your own, since it varies widely with ticket complexity.

| Option | Basis | Monthly cost | Cost per ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-house US hire | 250 h x $30.71 loaded | about $7,678 | about $5.12 |
| Outsourced, onshore US | 250 h x $28 to $40 | $7,000 to $10,000 | $4.67 to $6.67 |
| Outsourced, offshore Asia | 250 h x $7 to $16 | $1,750 to $4,000 | $1.17 to $2.67 |
| AI per resolution | 1,500 x $0.99, if all resolved | about $1,485 plus seats | about $0.99 plus seats |
| AI team, flat price | beereau Support team at $100/month | $100 within the monthly limit | about $0.07 |

A few honest caveats about this table:

- Real staffing is lumpy. 250 hours is about one and a half full-time people, and you also need cover for sick days, holidays and peaks.
- The AI rows exclude your review time. If you spend 15 minutes a day approving answers, that is about 7 to 8 hours a month; value it at whatever your hour is worth.
- The per-resolution row assumes the AI closes every ticket. In practice some tickets go to a human, so you pay for both.
- The flat-price row is the list price divided by the volume the team is sized for. Harder tickets use more of the monthly limit than easy ones.

Even with generous allowances for review time, the gap is large enough that for routine tickets, cost is rarely the reason to keep doing it by hand. The real questions are quality and control.

## How does a monthly cap change the math?

The risk with any usage-based AI is a surprise bill: a spike in tickets, a long angry thread, or an agent that retries a failing step. A **hard monthly limit** is a ceiling the provider will not cross without your say-so.

Here is how it works in beereau, as one example of the pattern. Every office has a hard monthly limit. At 80% of it, the office switches to **economy mode**: urgent work continues and the rest is batched. At 100%, you choose whether to pause or allow a capped overage. Nothing runs past the limit silently.

Whatever tool you use, ask the vendor three questions:

1. Is there a hard limit, or only an alert?
2. What happens to urgent tickets when I reach it?
3. Can I see the cost of each task, not just the monthly total?

Cost per task is what lets you spot the expensive categories. The tactics for keeping spend down, such as batching and trimming long threads, are in [how to control AI agent costs](/blog/control-ai-agent-costs).

## Is cheaper support worse support?

Not necessarily, but cheap support without review is a risk. The costs that do not show up in this table are wrong answers and lost customers. In a Gartner survey of 5,728 customers, 64% said they would prefer companies did not use AI for customer service, and 53% said they would consider switching to a competitor over it ([Gartner](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2024-07-09-gartner-survey-finds-64-percent-of-customers-would-prefer-that-companies-didnt-use-ai-for-customer-service)).

That argues for structure, not for avoiding AI: a lead that reviews drafts, a clear route to a human, and approvals on money and exceptions. How to set that up is covered in [how to build an AI customer support team](/blog/ai-customer-support-team) and [human in the loop AI](/blog/human-in-the-loop-ai). Track first response time, resolution rate and satisfaction alongside cost; [customer support metrics for small business](/blog/customer-support-metrics) has the list.

## Next step

Pull last month's numbers: tickets resolved, hours spent (yours included) and every support-related bill. Divide to get your current cost per ticket, then put it next to the table above. If your number is in dollars and most of your tickets are routine, a flat-priced [AI customer support team](/ai-customer-support-team-software) with you approving the decisions is worth a three-day trial.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does AI customer support cost per ticket?

It depends on the pricing model. Per-resolution tools charge around a dollar for each ticket the AI closes, while flat monthly plans can come to cents per ticket at the volume they are sized for. Add the time you spend reviewing and approving answers.

### How much does a human customer service rep cost?

In the US, the median wage for customer service representatives was 21.53 dollars an hour in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. BLS data shows wages are about 70 percent of private-sector compensation costs, so benefits add a bit over 40 percent on top of wages.

### Is outsourcing customer support cheaper than hiring?

Offshore outsourcing usually is, with published rates often between about 7 and 16 dollars per agent hour in Asia. Onshore US outsourcing is often quoted around 28 to 40 dollars an hour, which can cost more than an in-house hire.

### What is the cheapest way to handle customer support for a small business?

For routine, repetitive tickets, AI agents with a flat monthly price and a human approving the important decisions are usually the cheapest per ticket. For low volume, the owner answering directly can still be cheapest in cash, but not in time.

### What drives the cost of AI customer support up?

Long email threads, tickets that need many steps, agents that retry or loop, and pricing that charges for every resolution without a ceiling. A hard monthly limit is the simplest protection.

### How do I calculate cost per ticket?

Add up everything you spend on support in a month, including wages, software and your own time at an hourly value, then divide by the number of tickets resolved that month. Compare options using resolved tickets, not conversations started.

### Does AI customer support have hidden costs?

The common ones are setup time, the time you spend reviewing answers, per-seat fees for human agents who still use the helpdesk, and overage charges. Ask any vendor what happens to your bill if volume doubles.
